Berlin Hauptbahnhof Five-Level Atrium
Opened in 2006. Elevated east-west platforms and underground north-south platforms cross each other, and the five levels between them are pierced by a single atrium. Light from the glass vault at the top passes down through layer after layer of steel and escalators to the platforms 15 meters below ground. Looking down from the railings, you see floor after floor stacked up with their centers open, and people moving up and down inside glass cylinders. In a lull between trains, standing at the bottom of this vertical shaft, the only thing that becomes clear is that you are on an in-between level, belonging neither "above" nor "below." A vertical waiting room where the words "arrival" and "departure" lose their meaning.
