Taushubetsu River Bridge (Phantom Bridge)

A concrete arch bridge of the former JNR Shihoro Line, standing in Lake Nukabira in Kamishihoro, Hokkaido. Completed in 1937, it is 130 m long with eleven arches, and it went out of use in 1955 when the line was rerouted for the construction of Nukabira Dam. As the reservoir level rises and falls, the bridge emerges above the water from winter to spring and sinks beneath it from summer to autumn. It crumbles a little more each year, and part of a side wall collapsed again in April 2026. To see it up close, either borrow the key to the forest road gate (reservation required) or join a guided tour. It can also be seen in the distance from an observation deck along the national highway. Please do not climb onto the bridge.
