Rådhuset Station, Bedrock Cave Platform

Opened in 1975. Rather than smoothing the excavated bedrock, the builders left its rough surface and painted it a reddish color, turning the station into a cave-like space. The artist Sigvard Olsson imagined fragments of Kungsholmen's history buried in soft earth and now coming to light, and set into the walls items such as chimney foundations, a 17th-century doorway and market tools. When the train leaves, only the sound of the escalators remains under the rock, and it feels less like being beneath a city than being lost inside the layers of the earth.
