Pennine Tower, Lancaster Services

A tower shaped like an air traffic control tower, standing at Lancaster services on the M6 motorway. When it opened in 1965, its top, about 20 m high, held a waiter-service restaurant and an observation deck with views across Morecambe Bay and the surrounding hills. It closed to the public in 1989 because adequate emergency escape routes could not be provided, and was used for a while as offices and storage, but it now stands empty. It was listed at Grade II in 2012. The service area below is still open, but the top of the tower is not accessible.
