Marina City, Spiral Parking Garage

Twin cylindrical towers along the Chicago River designed by Bertrand Goldberg; the 65-story towers were completed in the early 1960s. The upper floors are apartments, with fan-shaped units and semicircular balconies arranged in a radial pattern, while the lower 19 floors are an open spiral parking garage with no exterior walls. Cars are parked by attendants, and the sight of them working their way up around the circle is clearly visible from outside. At night, the lit spiral floors look like an urban void made of the same view stacked again and again. The upper floors are homes, so please admire it from outside.
