La Muralla Roja, Calpe
A 50-unit apartment complex on a seaside cliff in Calpe, eastern Spain, completed in 1973 to a design by Ricardo Bofill. Its design takes cues from the kasbahs of North Africa, with exterior walls painted in shades from red to pink and the courtyards and stairs in blue and violet. Stairs and walkways fold back on one another again and again, so wherever you climb you arrive at a similar landing framed by a cut-out patch of sky, and in photos it can look almost like flat graphic art. Since around 2019 the grounds have been limited to residents and guests, and general visits are not possible. Please enjoy it only from outside.
