Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències
A complex of cultural facilities in Valencia, Spain. Construction began in 1996 on the old bed of the Turia River, which was diverted after the great flood of 1957, and the buildings opened one after another between 1998 and 2009. Most were designed by Santiago Calatrava, while the aquarium was the work of Félix Candela. An eye-shaped planetarium, a skeleton-like science museum, and an arched promenade stand in a row along the long, narrow site. The spaces between the buildings are wide, with little but shallow reflecting pools and white paving.
