7132 Therme, Vals (Stone Baths)

A thermal bath designed by Peter Zumthor and completed in 1996. It is built from about 60,000 slabs of locally quarried Vals gneiss laid in layers, and set half into the mountainside. Light falls through narrow gaps in the ceiling, and small pools of water at different temperatures are linked by stone passages. Apart from the large windows that open onto the valley, there is only stone, water and shadow, and you find yourself drifting through the water with no particular destination. Visitors not staying at the hotel must book in advance, and guests are asked not to take photographs inside the baths.
