Liminal space · Italy

Toledo Station

A station on Naples Metro Line 1, opened in 2012 and designed by the Spanish architect Óscar Tusquets. A cone-shaped shaft, the "Crater de Luz" (crater of light), runs from street level deep underground, and an LED work by Robert Wilson lights the blue mosaic lining it in constantly shifting colors. Riding the long escalators down through the blue feels like sinking to the bottom of the sea. When the crowds thin out, there is a stillness like being left alone in an artificial deep sea.
