Gare do Oriente
A rail, metro and bus interchange in northeastern Lisbon, opened in May 1998 for Expo '98, the Lisbon World Exposition held that year. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava. The roof over the elevated platforms is supported by white steel columns that branch out at the top to hold up the glass, and it has been likened to a grove of palm trees or the vaulted ceiling of a Gothic cathedral. Light falling between the branches casts a net of shadows on the platforms, and in the gaps between trains only the white framework and its shadows remain. It is also a place where everyone is on their way somewhere else.
