Liminal space · Russia

Komsomolskaya Station, Circle Line Platform

Opened in 1952 and designed by Alexey Shchusev. White stucco Baroque-style ornament lines a yellow vaulted ceiling, from which a row of chandeliers hangs. Set into the ceiling are eight mosaics by Pavel Korin depicting generals and battles from Russian history, and the floor is red granite. A palace-like interior placed in a transfer station 37 meters underground, its function and its decoration never quite seem to match. Left alone under the lavish ceiling just after a train pulls out, you start to lose track of what this room is actually for.
