Kane Pixels（ケイン・パーソンズ）とは何者か？16歳の投稿から映画監督になるまで
掲示板のテキストでしかなかったバックルームズを、誰もが思い浮かべる「あの映像」に変えた人物がいます。当時16歳の高校生、Kane Pixelsことケイン・パーソンズ。その4年後、彼は同じ題材でA24の長編監督デビューを果たしました。

何者なのか
2005年6月18日、カリフォルニア州ペタルマ生まれ。父親はVFXアーティストで、映像制作を始めたのは2017年のことです。学生時代から作品を公開し続けており、専門的な訓練を受けたというより、独学で手を動かし続けてきたタイプの作り手です。
バックルームズ以前の作品としては、「Project 209」(2020〜2021)や、『進撃の巨人』を実在の戦争記録映像であるかのように再構成した「Attack on Titan (Historical Footage)」(2021)があります。この時点ですでに、フィクションを記録映像の質感に落とし込むという彼の得意技は確立していました。
2022年1月7日、9分の短編
「The Backrooms (Found Footage)」がYouTubeに公開されたのは2022年1月7日。1990年代のホームビデオ風の画質で、少年がカメラを回しながら黄色い部屋に迷い込むという、たったそれだけの9分です。単体で8,000万回前後、シリーズ全体では約2億回という再生数に到達しました。
本人によれば、動機はシンプルで、この題材に見合う品質の映像が当時どこにも存在しなかったから。制作期間は約1か月でした。
その後この短編は全25話のシリーズへ発展します。軸になるのはAsync Research Instituteという架空の研究機関で、1990年代にMRIの研究過程で異次元への入口を発見してしまった、という筋書き。第12回ストリーミー・アワードでCreator Honorを受賞しています。最終話「Everything Must Go」は2026年8月18日に公開されました。
制作手法：Blenderと、ひとりでやること
使っているのは3DCGソフトのBlenderとAdobe After Effectsが中心。モデリング、編集、音楽までを基本的に本人が手がけ、後年はモーションキャプチャも取り入れています。
彼の映像が異様に生々しいのは、CGの精度そのものより、カメラの持ち方や露出の失敗、ピントの迷いといった「素人が撮った映像に必ずあるノイズ」を意図的に再現しているからです。きれいに作らないという判断が、最も効いている部分と言えます。
もう一つの代表作「The Oldest View」
バックルームズ以外で必ず名前が挙がるのが、2023年から2024年にかけて公開された「The Oldest View」です。あるYouTubeのVlog投稿者が、地下へ延々と続く階段を発見してしまうという内容のミステリー・スリラー。
バックルームズの続きを期待して観ると裏切られますが、彼の作家性——日常の風景に、説明のつかない構造物を1つだけ置く——はむしろこちらのほうが分かりやすいかもしれません。
20歳でのA24デビューと、生成AIへの立場
第1話の投稿から約1か月で複数のスタジオから映画化の打診が届き、2023年2月にA24を中心とした企画として始動。当時17歳でした。撮影は2025年夏のバンクーバー、4つのサウンドステージに約2,800平方メートルのセットを組んで行われ、彼は19歳。2026年5月の公開時には20歳で、全米・全世界の初登場興行ランキング1位を獲得した史上最年少の監督となりました。
また2026年半ばには、映画制作における生成AIの使用について「それでは目的そのものが失われてしまう」と公に批判しています。ノートPCとBlenderだけでここまで来た作り手の発言として読むと、彼が何を面白がっているのかがよく分かります。
彼の映像が「本物っぽい」理由
結局のところ、パーソンズの作品が刺さるのは、描いている空間が完全な想像上のものではないからでしょう。誰もが通り過ぎたことのある廊下、階段、部屋。そこから人の気配だけを抜いて、カメラの粗さを足す。それだけで、現実は十分に不気味になります。

Who Is Kane Pixels? From a Post at Sixteen to Directing for A24
Someone turned the Backrooms from a block of message-board text into the footage everyone now pictures. That was Kane Parsons — Kane Pixels — then a sixteen-year-old high school student. Four years later he made his A24 feature debut with the same material.
Who He Is
Born June 18, 2005 in Petaluma, California. His father is a visual effects artist, and he began making videos in 2017. He has been publishing work since school — self-taught, in the sense of someone who simply kept making things.
Before the Backrooms came Project 209 (2020–2021) and Attack on Titan (Historical Footage) (2021), which restaged the anime as if it were genuine wartime documentary footage. His signature move — rendering fiction with the texture of archival footage — was already fully formed.
January 7, 2022: Nine Minutes
The Backrooms (Found Footage) went up on YouTube on January 7, 2022: nine minutes of 1990s-camcorder-grade video in which a boy with a camera wanders into the yellow rooms. Around eighty million views on its own; roughly 197 million across the series.
His stated motivation was simple — no work of matching quality existed for the concept at the time. The first episode took about a month.
It grew into a twenty-five episode series built around the Async Research Institute, a fictional organisation that found a doorway to another dimension during 1990s MRI research. The series won a Creator Honor at the 12th Streamy Awards. The finale, Everything Must Go, was released on August 18, 2026.
The Method: Blender, and Doing It Alone
Mainly Blender and Adobe After Effects. He handles modelling, editing and music himself, adding motion capture in later work.
What makes his footage feel so real is not render quality but the deliberate reproduction of amateur-camera noise: the way a hand holds a camcorder, blown exposure, hunting focus. The decision not to make it look clean is doing most of the work.
The Other Key Work: The Oldest View
Released across 2023 and 2024, The Oldest View is the work people cite alongside the Backrooms: a mystery thriller in which a YouTube vlogger discovers a staircase that keeps descending.
It disappoints anyone expecting more Backrooms, but it may show his authorial signature more plainly — take ordinary scenery, and place exactly one unexplainable structure inside it.
An A24 Debut at Twenty, and a Position on Generative AI
Within about a month of episode one, multiple studios approached him; by February 2023 the project was underway with A24 at its centre. He was seventeen. Filming took place in Vancouver in summer 2025 across four sound stages holding more than 30,000 square feet of sets — he was nineteen. When the film opened in May 2026 he was twenty, and became the youngest director ever to debut at number one domestically and worldwide.
In mid-2026 he publicly criticised generative AI in filmmaking, saying it defeats the purpose entirely. Read as a statement from someone who got here with a laptop and Blender, it explains a lot about what he actually enjoys.
Why His Footage Feels Real
Ultimately his work lands because the spaces are not invented. Corridors, staircases and rooms everyone has walked through. Subtract the people, add camera grain, and reality is unsettling enough on its own.
