匿名掲示板4chanのオカルト板に、なんとなく「おかしい」と感じる画像を貼ってほしい、というスレッドが立ちました。そこに投稿されたのが問題の写真です。用途の分からない部屋、人の姿はゼロ、家具もほとんどない。

別の匿名ユーザーが返信で設定を付け加えたことで、この写真は都市伝説になります。現実の壁をノークリップしてしまうとここに落ちる、蛍光灯の唸りと湿ったカーペットの匂いだけがある——書き込みはそれだけの短いものでした。

5年間、誰も撮影場所を知らなかった

奇妙なことに、これほど世界的に拡散した画像でありながら、出所はずっと不明でした。誰が撮ったのか、どこの建物なのか、そもそも実在するのか。合成ではないかという説さえありました。

この宙ぶらりんの状態が、かえって伝説を強めた面はあります。場所が分からないからこそ、どこにでもありそうに見える。

2024年、ウィスコンシン州オシュコシュと判明

2024年5月、ネット上の有志が撮影場所を突き止めました。アメリカ・ウィスコンシン州オシュコシュ。撮影は2002年6月で、翌2003年にホビーショップHobbyTown USAのブログ記事として公開されていた改装記録の中の1枚でした。

写っているのは、かつて家具店だった建物の2階にあった一室。改装工事の途中だったため、家具も人もなく、壁紙と照明だけが残っていた——それだけの話です。ちなみにこの空間は、その後ラジコンカーのレース場になりました。

つまり、世界中を不安にさせ続けたあの部屋は、ただ工事中だった普通の建物の一室だったということになります。

「実在した」ことが、なぜ重要なのか

この特定は、単なる雑学以上の意味を持っています。あの部屋が実在したという事実は、バックルームズの怖さが超自然的なものではなく、私たちが日常的に通り過ぎている空間そのものに由来していることを裏づけているからです。

2026年公開の映画版で、主人公が家具店の店主として設定されているのも、この事実を踏まえたものと考えられます。元の写真が撮られた建物も、かつて家具店だったのです。

あなたの街にも、たぶん同じ部屋がある

改装中のテナント、閉店後の商業施設、用途が変わる直前の建物。人の営みだけが一時的に抜き取られた空間は、どの街にも一定数あります。バックルームズの元写真が特別だったのは、それが撮影され、たまたま掲示板に貼られたからにすぎません。

It Began With a Post on May 12, 2019

A thread on 4chan's paranormal board asked for images that just feel off. Someone posted the photograph: a room with no discernible purpose, no people, almost no furniture.

Another anonymous user replied with the premise, and the photo became a legend. Noclip out of reality and you fall in here; there is only the hum of fluorescent lights and the smell of damp carpet. That short post was all it took.

For Five Years, Nobody Knew Where It Was

Strangely, for an image this widely circulated, its origin stayed a blank. Who took it, what building it was, whether it was even real — some people argued it had to be a render.

That uncertainty arguably strengthened the legend. Because the place could not be located, it looked like it could be anywhere.

2024: Oshkosh, Wisconsin

In May 2024 internet researchers traced it. Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA. The photo was taken in June 2002 and had been published in 2003 as part of a renovation log on a HobbyTown USA blog post.

The room was on the second floor of a building that had previously been a furniture store. It was mid-renovation, which is why there were no people and no furniture — only wallpaper and lighting. The space later became a radio-controlled car racing track.

So the room that unsettled the entire internet was, in fact, an ordinary building under construction.

Why It Matters That It Was Real

This is more than trivia. The fact that the room existed confirms that the fear the Backrooms trades in is not supernatural — it comes from the ordinary spaces we walk through every day.

It is almost certainly why the 2026 film makes its protagonist a furniture store owner. The building in the original photograph had been a furniture store too.

There Is Probably a Room Like It Near You

A retail unit mid-renovation, a mall after closing, a building in the gap between one use and the next. Every city has a supply of spaces with the human activity temporarily removed. The original Backrooms room was special only in that someone photographed it and it happened to end up on a message board.
