Old Elbe Tunnel (Alter Elbtunnel)
Opened in 1911, this tunnel runs about 426 meters beneath the Elbe in Hamburg. From domed buildings on either bank, you descend about 24 meters below the water by large elevators or stairs, then walk through one of two tiled tubes to the other side. Small ceramic reliefs are set at regular intervals along the white walls, showing fish, crabs and shellfish, and even rats and discarded rubbish. Since 2019 it has been open only to pedestrians and cyclists. At times when no one is passing through, the century-old tiled tubes run straight on toward the vanishing point.
