Ordos Kangbashi New District, Civic Square
A new district of Ordos in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Construction aimed at a population of around one million began around 2004, and the city government moved here in 2006. Residents were slow to arrive, and from around 2009 it was reported around the world as a "ghost town," but the population has since grown and more than 100,000 people now live here. Around the plaza stand the Ordos Museum designed by MAD, which looks like a mass of metal, a library shaped like a row of books, and a grand theater that recalls a Mongolian headdress, while only a few people cross the vast paved expanse.
