Bombay Beach Drive-In, Salton Sea
A small town on the eastern shore of California's Salton Sea, 68 meters below sea level. The lake formed in 1905 when river water overflowed from an irrigation canal, and in the 1950s and 60s it thrived as a lakeside resort, but rising salinity and mass fish die-offs drove people away. Today the population is just over 200. The "Drive-In" on the edge of town is an artwork by artists connected with the Bombay Beach Biennale: old cars and boats lined up in front of a white trailer that serves as the screen. People live nearby, so please visit quietly.
