Egypt's New Administrative Capital, Government District
Egypt's new capital, announced in 2015 and under construction in the desert east of Cairo. It is planned to cover about 700 km² and house 6.5 million people. Parliament and ministry buildings, the Iconic Tower (the tallest building in Africa), and a vast mosque and cathedral stand along wide avenues that meet in straight lines. Many ministries moved here in 2023, and in 2024 it officially began functioning as the seat of government, but few people live here yet, and many of its streets remain new and quiet.
