Unité d'Habitation (Cité Radieuse), Interior Street

A housing block in Marseille designed by Le Corbusier, begun in 1947 and completed in 1952. It contains 337 apartments, and seven corridors known as "interior streets" run along the length of the building. The street on the middle floors is lined with shops and a hotel, and the apartment doors are painted in red, yellow, blue and other colors. The long, windowless corridors are dim, and the view barely changes however far you walk. People still live here, and public access is limited to areas such as the shopping street and the roof. Please do not enter the residential floors without permission.

LIMap is a map for finding and sharing liminal spaces: places emptied of people that feel eerie and nostalgic at the same time. Many of these places are private or off-limits, so please follow the notes above and view them only from where you are allowed.
