Liminal space · Malaysia

Forest City, Johor

A development on artificial islands reclaimed from the strait with Singapore, in Johor at the southern tip of Malaysia. Led by the major Chinese property developer Country Garden, it began selling units in the mid-2010s and promoted itself as a city for 700,000 people. As of 2023, however, fewer than 10,000 people were reported to live there, and many windows in the high-rise towers stay dark at night. Streets of well-kept paving, roadside trees and closed shops seem frozen, still waiting for people to arrive. Some people do live here, so please be considerate of residents when taking photos.

LIMap is a map for finding and sharing liminal spaces: places emptied of people that feel eerie and nostalgic at the same time. Many of these places are private or off-limits, so please follow the notes above and view them only from where you are allowed.
