Al Madam Buried Village

An abandoned village in the desert of the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Rows of houses and a mosque remain, said to have been built in the 1970s to settle nomadic people. The residents reportedly left by around the 1990s, after which sand dunes flowed into the houses. Thresholds are buried in sand, room floors have turned into slopes, and only the colors painted on the walls hint at the lives once lived here. Identical houses stand in rows, each sunk halfway into the sand in the same way. The buildings are deteriorating and could collapse, so watch your step and what is overhead, and come prepared for the daytime heat.
