Buzludzha Monument

A saucer-shaped monument built in 1981 on a mountaintop 1,441 meters above sea level, commemorating the 1891 gathering that marked the beginning of Bulgaria's socialist movement. Inside the building, about 60 meters across, is a circular main hall whose walls and ceiling were covered with about 937 square meters of mosaics. After the change of regime in 1989, upkeep stopped, the roof was torn open, and the mosaics were damaged by wind and rain. Conservation work is now under way and entry to the interior is prohibited. Please view it only from outside.
