Rotterdam Centraal Wooden-Lattice Platforms

A station completely rebuilt in 2014. Its sharply pointed metal roof juts out over the square to the south, toward the city center. Inside, the ceiling of the hall is covered with a lattice of thin wooden slats, and beyond it a glass roof covers the platforms in one continuous span. Light falling through the glass is cut into fine pieces by the wooden lattice and always casts the same pattern on the floor. Because the glass-walled hall opens straight onto the square, there is no clear moment of having entered the station. In the quiet before the first trains, only the lattice pattern stays still. A roof that is neither arrival nor departure, made for a city that is simply passed through, over and over.
