Kayaköy, Village of Stone

A village known in Greek as Levissi, once home to several thousand Greek Orthodox Christians. Its residents left in the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, and the village was left on the hillside, almost uninhabited ever since. An earthquake in 1957 damaged many of the houses as well. Around 500 roofless stone houses are stacked up along the slope, and churches still stand among them. It is now protected as a historic site, and you can walk through it after paying an entrance fee. Many of the walls are crumbling, so watch your step.
