Craco, Abandoned Hilltop Village

A village on a hilltop in the province of Matera. Tombs from the 8th century BC have been found here, and its name appears in a document from 1060. A landslide in 1963 led residents to begin relocating, and after a flood in 1972 and an earthquake in 1980, the old town was left completely empty. Its residents have moved to a new settlement at the foot of the hill. The surrounding land is a sparsely vegetated, eroded terrain known as calanchi, and the tower and stone houses remain stacked on the summit. The old town can be entered only with an authorized guide, wearing a helmet.
