Wohnpark Alterlaa, Common Areas

A large housing estate in southwestern Vienna where about 9,000 people live in some 3,200 apartments. Designed by Harry Glück and others and built from 1973 to 1985, it consists of three rows of blocks, each about 400 m long. Rooftop and indoor pools, a shopping center, clinics, schools, and more are all within the estate, and underground parking and passageways connect the blocks. Its long, fluorescent-lit corridors have a stillness, until someone passes by, as though they had forgotten where they lead. This is where residents live their daily lives, so please be considerate when photographing or entering the common areas.

LIMap is a map for finding and sharing liminal spaces: places emptied of people that feel eerie and nostalgic at the same time. Many of these places are private or off-limits, so please follow the notes above and view them only from where you are allowed.
