Salk Institute, Central Plaza

A biological research institute in La Jolla, California, designed by Louis Kahn at the request of Jonas Salk and completed in 1965. Between the facing laboratory buildings lies a travertine plaza, which, on the advice of the architect Luis Barragán, was left without plants, with only a single narrow channel of water running down its center. Beyond the channel the Pacific horizon opens up, and around the spring and autumn equinoxes the sun sets in line with it. As a working research facility, the courtyard can only be visited on architecture tours booked in advance.
