Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

Sri Lanka's second international airport, opened in 2013 near Hambantota in the south of the country. Most of the construction cost was financed by loans from the Export-Import Bank of China, and it was expected to handle one million passengers a year, but scheduled flights never took hold and it was reported as "the world's emptiest international airport." The terminal, complete with boarding bridges and a departure lounge, has almost no sign of people during the hours without flights. The surrounding area is also elephant habitat. In recent years seasonal charter flights have operated, and handing its operation to a private company has been under consideration.
