MAC Niterói, Red Ramp

Opened in 1996 and designed by Oscar Niemeyer. On a rocky point jutting into Guanabara Bay, a saucer-like gallery 50 meters across sits on a cylindrical base, surrounded at its foot by a reflecting pool. A red ramp sweeps up from the ground in a wide curve to the entrance, and as you climb, the bay and the far shore slowly turn around you. Inside, a band of windows wraps around the central gallery, looking out over Rio de Janeiro and Sugarloaf Mountain. The slope you walk before entering the building is itself a passage that draws out the moment of arrival.
