Liminal space · Azerbaijan

Heydar Aliyev Center

A cultural center designed by Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012. The outer skin, floors and ceilings are joined as one continuous curved surface, and there is no boundary anywhere between wall and floor. Inside the pure white interior there are no straight lines or corners to help you judge distance, and light wraps smoothly around the surfaces, so the depth of the space never settles. The handrails curve, the stairs curve, and even in the auditorium bands of wood ripple around the seats. Sound does not bounce off corners either, so footsteps fade away with a strange softness. Having designed away the very idea of boundaries, it is a building where you cannot tell whether you are inside it or simply passing through.
