Ashgabat White Marble Blocks
After independence in 1991, the center of the capital was rebuilt with one white marble-clad building after another, and in 2013 the city was recognized by Guinness World Records as having the highest density of white marble buildings (543 of them). Government offices and apartment blocks alike are finished in the same white, with wide avenues, golden domes and squares lined with statues, yet few people are seen walking. The overly tidy streets can look like a life-size model. Photographing government buildings and the presidential palace is prohibited, and police may stop you, so be careful.
