Boston City Hall Plaza
Boston City Hall, completed in 1968, and the roughly 3-hectare brick-paved plaza in front of it. The concrete building, whose upper floors project progressively outward, sat for many years on a vast expanse of paving with little shade (trees and a play area were added in a 2022 renovation). Though modeled on European piazzas, the plaza is too large to be filled by everyday foot traffic: wind sweeps through in winter, and in summer the glare off the bricks is strong. Only figures cutting diagonally across it and the grid of the building's windows repeat with any regularity.
