Nurzhol Boulevard, Astana

The central axis of Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, laid out in the new city on the left bank of the Ishim River after the capital moved there in 1997. Along this axis, based on a master plan by Kisho Kurokawa, a pedestrian boulevard of a little over 2 km runs in a straight line from the presidential palace, Ak Orda, to the Khan Shatyr shopping center. Government buildings and high-rises line both sides, with gold-tinted glass and blue domes catching the eye. The buildings and paving are all new and there is little sense of daily life, so walking here feels like moving through an architect's rendering of a finished city.
