Coober Pedy Dugouts

A desert town in South Australia that produces much of the world's gem-quality opal. Because summer days above 40 degrees are common, about half the residents live in "dugouts", homes carved out of the rock. There are also underground churches and hotels, and the rooms, with tool marks still on their walls, stay at around 23 degrees all year. Above ground, mounds of mining spoil dot the landscape and few people are about. Most dugouts are private homes, so visit those open to the public. The mining fields are full of vertical shafts, so do not enter unsigned areas.
